Review: Skin Hour Revitaleyes Eye Balm

They say that aging begins at 25, but I’m willing to bet this month’s paycheck that “they” also own a skin care line and would like to appeal to the vanity of the middle class twenty-somethings. After all, we’re the age group that can afford to throw away our disposable income at cosmetics and all the good things in life (assuming we didn’t settle down and have kids at a young age). I’m approaching my mid-twenties and I’m not getting any younger, but I refuse to let advertisers manipulate my anxieties so I can get suckered into buying products I don’t need. Besides, most commercially-made moisturizers and a bunch of other cosmetics contain all sorts of harsh chemicals that dry up the skin and cause early wrinkles. Not to mention that even the most expensive anti-aging treatments won’t make a dent against genetics, if you have genes that make you look ten years older than you really are. While I believe in taking care of myself and always looking my best, I don’t believe in throwing away money to delay the inevitable, especially if the inevitable can be prevented by simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking (which I did on January 1).

That being said, I did buy my first anti-aging product very recently – Skin Hour’s Revitaleyes Eye Cream. It’s not marketed as an anti-aging product per se, but it works along the same principles of moisturizing the undereye area to minimize the appearance of lines, reduce puffiness, lighten dark circles, and firm the skin. I grabbed this from The Good Earth for 100 bucks when I was shopping for day and night creams (also from Skin Hour – review to follow soon) and figured it wouldn’t hurt to include an eye balm in my nightly skin care regimen. Yes, the advertisers do hit a nerve, but I will always find cheaper and more natural alternatives to the products they push at me. :P

DO LIKE

* Unscented. If you can’t tell the difference between a real organic product from a product claiming to be “natural”, take a whiff. Organic products either have a very faint scent or none at all, whereas commercially made products have strong, distinct aromas to make the product more appealing or to disguise the scent of the chemical ingredients. The Revitaleyes Eye Balm is completely unscented, which is really important to me. I have a highly reactive nose that becomes extra sensitive at night, and strong perfumes make me sneeze til my nose feels raw.
* Moisturizes well. One quick swipe of your fingertip will give you all the product you need for one undereye. The eye balm is very moist, like sticky lip balm, and it stays on your skin for a very long time. I have a habit of giving my eyes a rub when I’m sleepy (another habit that contributes to wrinkles, I know), and was surprised to feel how moist my undereye was from the eye balm.
* The price tag. Only P100 for a lip balm-sized pot! The pot may be small, but it’s filled to the brim and you only need to apply very little of the product with every use. One pot should last you at least a month.
* The packaging. I like that the eye balm comes in a little box with the ingredients printed underneath. Makes it a really convenient and affordable gift item. Its tiny size also makes it great for travel.

DO NOT LIKE

* I can’t think of a single thing I don’t like about this product!

CONCLUSION

I can’t actually tell if the Revitalieyes Eye Balm really does lighten undereye color or minimize the appearance of lines, because I don’t have wrinkles or dark undereyes to begin with. What I do notice is that it’s very effective at reducing puffiness. No matter how late insomnia keeps me up, I never wake up with eye bags! I also love how it feels on my undereye, especially when I massage that area. Maybe I’m too young to worry about aging, and maybe anti-aging manufacturers are just scaring the twenty-somethings into buying their products. But hey, what’s a hundred bucks for my own peace of mind?

WILL I REPURCHASE?

Yes! I’ll even give away a bunch of these to my girlfriends this Christmas.

    the best way to prevent ageing aside from moisturization is sun protection…one blogger told me that there was a study that claims if one is never exposed to sunlight, then that person would not show signs of ageing (but i guess would lack all other nutrients the sun provides, haha!)

    anyway, being organic cannot really be sensed, so unless certified, we can’t really tell…but based on the ingredients, this should be a good product, if you only need prevention! :D
