I don’t know if anyone else will agree with me on this, but I don’t think it’s very smart to spend on high-end mascaras. Mascara is pretty much the least noticeable of all cosmetics. Unless you have long lashes that naturally stand out to begin with, no one will probably notice mascara’s subtle defining effect until that person’s face is a few inches away from yours. And unless that person is your boyfriend (or your lover or whatever), it’d be creepy for someone to stand that close to you on purpose. Not to mention that men never really pay attention to that sort of thing. Secondly, it’s silly to pay anything more than P500 for mascara when the best ones (in my opinion) can be had for less than that. For me, the best mascaras are by Maybelline. Even before my makeup addition, I was impressed by Maybelline mascara’s ability to do wonders for my lashes. The first mascara I ever bought for myself was the Maybelline Intense XXL; it’s the one with the white section that provides extra length and a black one for extra volume. I used this mascara for years (as in I actually haven’t thrown it out yet), but two weeks ago I finally replaced it with a new Maybelline mascara – the Volum Express Cat Eyes Mascara.

I have my sister Marielle to thank for introducing me to this amazing product. I was impressed by how the mascara defined her long lashes, but what convinced me to get my own was she showed me how this mascara can curl your lashes without the help of an eyelash curler. I don’t have a proper curler (the free one I got from Etude House doesn’t really do much), I’m too cheap and lazy to buy a proper curler, and I’m glad this product eliminates the need for one. Also, I’m told it’s unsanitary to share mascara with other people and I don’t think I should keep borrowing hers.

DO LIKE
* Defines and volumizes. The Maybelline Volum Express Cat Eyes Mascara doesn’t lengthen so much as it volumizes and curls, and which then gives your lashes the illusion of length. Fortunately, my lashes are long enough to benefit from this volumizing feature. I love how this mascara makes my eyes look more “awake” and pretty.
* Eliminates the need for an eyelash curler. I already mentioned that above but I felt the need to say it again. No need for an eyelash curler when you use this mascara! After applying onto your lashes, wait a minute or so for the mascara to dry, the push your lashes upward gently with your fingertip. Your lashes will curl without the help of an eyelash curler! I did see photos of how this mascara looks on curled lashes, and it’s starting to make me wonder if I do need an eyelash curler in my life.
* Comb applicator. Unlike most mascara wands, the Maybelline Cat Eyes mascara comes with a comb applicator that opens your lashes and spreads it more evenly.
* Easy to remove. Despite being waterproof mascara, I had no trouble removing it with my Etude House Eye and Lip Makeup Remover (review to follow soon).
* The price tag. I snagged this baby for only P300 when Maybelline had their end-of-the-year sale. What a fricking bargain! But even at its original price of P429, it’s a pretty inexpensive mascara.

DO NOT LIKE
* The clumpiness. This mascara is clumpy as hell. I know volumizing mascara is really clumpy by nature, but I think I’ll need that little mascara comb brush thing (the one that looks like a tiny comb) when I use this.
CONCLUSION
The photos don’t show it too well, but the Maybelline Cat Eyes Mascara is one of the few mascaras out there that can define my lashes without extra help from a lash curler. I love everything about this mascara and I’m glad I bought it when I did! If you have shorter lashes, this product won’t do you much good – get one of Maybelline’s lengthening mascaras instead.
WILL I REPURCHASE?
For as long as I have long-ish lashes, yes!

Hi Lauren! You can lightly wipe the end of the wand with a tissue to remove the excess mascara so your lashes do not get clumpy. Sayang yung excess product but it works :)
I used to do that for my other mascara but the tissue ends up removing most of the product from the comb applicator.
Hi
Anyone who can recommend good organic make up? My australian friend says mineral make up is not even good enough but the aussie organic make ups are so expensive..
Jill
As far as I know, mineral makeup is the closest thing we have to organic makeup. I think what’s important is that they don’t have the toxic, cancer-causing preservatives like formaldehyde.
will be waiting for that etude house make up remover review! i just bought l’oreal’s eye and lip make up remover over etude’s because it had a lot of good reviews already. but if i use all the contents up, i can buy 2 etude make up removers for the same price as 1 from l’oreal! they even have a remover specifically for mascaras, the pink one!
anyway, i feel for you about buying inexpensive mascaras too!
So far I’m really happy with the remover – it removes my eye makeup instantly, mascara included! :D I’m kind of a cheapskate when it comes to makeup removers, so I’m really glad the Etude one worked well despite the low price tag.
hi lauren, just found your blog today. Ang tanong ko bakit ngayun lang? hihihi.
love your blog.
is it really good? kasi mabilis mamula ang mata ko pag may make up ako eh.

Hee hee, thanks! You know what, I notice that my eyes do turn a little red when I use mascara. I’ll observe my eyes again the next time I wear mascara. I wonder if this has anything to do with my body being more reactive to chemicals now that I’ve been using more organic stuff.
you can put a colorless mascara as base so your lashes won’t clump together when you put on the black mascara
