Week 4: Nouveau Hippie

Last night, I went to a club for the first time in years. I love going out and having a good time, but clubbing is not how I like to spend my weekends. All anyone ever does at clubs is stand around and act like douchebags from Gossip Girl (please, we’re not in Manhattan). You can’t even have a decent conversation with anyone because the music is too loud. And nobody dances. So why did I go clubbing if I hate it so much? Well, if there are two thing clubs are good for, it’s dressing up and wearing heavy makeup, and I was in the mood for both last night. Plus, it was the launch of this swanky new place, so free food and open bar! (That’s right, you guessed it, I’m too cheap to buy overpriced club drinks. They say the trick is to get guys to buy you drinks, but do I really look like the kind of girl who uses her sexuality to get free booze?)

My outfit revolved around this gorgeous hippie headband from Matthew and Melka, which was a love at first sight affair. It’s impractical to have expensive tastes in accessories but I feel good about my sense of style when I walk into a room and see that nobody else is wearing a similar statement piece. Plus, my accessories gets me lots of compliments from strangers. Anyway, I wanted an eye makeup look that complements the jewel tones of my headband without being too matchy-matchy. Pink and brown would have been the obvious choice, so I picked related two colors – yellow and purple. I had serious doubts about this color combination at first, but I didn’t regret it one bit when I saw the finished look.

Eyes:
Dollface 88 color palette (review to come!)
Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Palette

Face:
MAC Studio Fix Powder foundation in NC42
NARS Orgasm

Lips:
Nyx Round Lipstick in Thalia

One thing I learned from this look is that foiling eyeshadow, especially the ones in the 88 piece palette, makes all the difference in the world. It’s more time-consuming but the color payoff is worth it, especially on Urban decay shadows. Who’d have thought Visine would become such an important component of my makeup table?

  2. Nikki says:

So glad you are exploring the wonderfully tricky world of foiling :) And don’t you just love such an unexpected combination like violet and yellow? (makes me think of ube-langka ice cream sometimes though haha)

    • Lauren says:

Yeah! It works but I probably won’t use this color combo too often. Apparently, yellow and purple are the colors of the Lakers. :P I do wish my palette were pigmented enough to not need foiling though, cos it’s a bit time-consuming.

I usually tame down the yellow with some light brown for a day look. :) Foiling may be time-consuming, but it gives me an excuse to use the “bad buys” eyeshadow in my makeup collection.
