While going through the entries of my Christmas giveaway, I noticed a number of people requesting that I do beauty tutorials on how to apply make up to complement my makeup reviews. Much as I’d love to indulge and reveal my beauty secrets to YouTube and beyond, talking to a camera makes me feel like an idiot, and I’m far too vain to reveal my unmade-up face to the Internet. So instead, I’d like to offer you something far more palatable than videos of myself trying to become the next Michelle Phan – How to Be a Girl with Jane Feltes.

I stumbled upon these beauty tutorials while aimlessly article-hopping through The Hairpin and I almost didn’t give it a chance. Except for Lauren Luke, I play beauty tutorials on mute because YouTube beauty gurus usually have an annoying voice and/or crappy taste in music. (I really don’t want to be listening to K-pop while figuring out how to do a french braid.) Since hitting the mute button wouldn’t have helped me learn the easy trick for doing a cat eye, I let Jane Feltes instruct me in the ways of cat-eye perfection. Ten seconds into my first video, I found myself with a renewed interest in my makeup stash and a new girl crush. Jane speaks with a well-modulated voice, uses chill ambient music instead of noisy disco beats, and is overall full of useful information on how to be a girl. She is also disarmingly witty and funny, which is something you don’t normally see in beauty tutorials. And she called work-appropriate makeup “pretty but boring”. How awesome is she?

I’ve taken the liberty of compiling my favorite How to Be a Girl videos below, and after viewing them I’m sure that all this clamoring for video tutorials by me will come to an end. You’re welcome.
