Levi’s Modern Vintage Jeans

A couple of nights ago, I discovered that a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in almost two years no longer fit me. They weren’t a particularly expensive pair nor were they my favorite, but the button’s inability to meet the buttonhole could only mean one thing: I have gotten fat. For this reason, the media launch of Levi’s spring 2010 Modern Vintage collection had me feeling a little nervous. You see, after getting a sneak peek of the new designs, everyone who was invited will be given their own pair of their new Modern Vintage jeans. It’s been two years since I last bought a pair of jeans, and my least favorite part about jeans shopping is finding out that the size you used to wear no longer fits you. After I graduated from high school, I was dismayed to see that I had also graduated from a 24 to a 25. During college, I became a 26. I was not looking forward to finding out how large my waistline is now.

Body issues aside, I was really curious about what the Modern Vintage collection would be like. Before the media event began, I greeted the concept with a little skepticism and confusion – I mean, what’s modern can’t be vintage and vice versa, so what’s with the oxymoronic title? Clearly I read too much into this, because the concept behind The Modern Vintage collection is simple: the designers took the best features of Levi’s jeans from the yesteryears (e.g. rivets and buttons from the 1870s) and incorporated them into modern, wearable styles. Don’t expect any mom jeans from the 80s in this collection – every single pair is designed to fit and flatter.

The Modern Vintage collection has three styles for women – slim, straight, and boyfriend. After a short fashion show (where the male models took off their shirts rawrrr), we were led to a room where we can fit and select our own shirtless male model pair of Modern Vintage jeans. Will I find a pair of jeans that will fit perfectly without making me develop an eating disorder?

It’s a good thing I thought to wear a minidress! Slipping in and out of the jeans was so easy.

levi's boyfriend jeans

The first pair I tried were the boyfriend cut jeans, in various sizes. I loved the wash and the finish of this style, but I didn’t like how loose and baggy they looked on me. I know that achieving the carefree loose and baggy look is the whole point of wearing the boyfriend jeans, but in order to pull them off I’d have to wear heels and a tight top. I don’t wear heels very often and clingy tops are so unflattering on me.

levi's slim fit

I thought the wash and finish of the straight cut jeans looked a little too denim blue, so I didn’t bother trying them on and went for the slim fit variety. You can’t really tell from the picture because the giant cuff, but they were a perfect fit! They were low-rise, but not too low as to show off my buttcrack when I sit down, and they hugged by waist comfortably – not too tightly but not too loose. One major pet peeve I have about my skinny jeans is the way they keep sliding down my waist to show the world what my panties look like. I hope this pair doesn’t end up doing the same thing after a couple of washes. I like keeping my panties tucked inside my jeans.

new jeans

If you’re in the hunt for jeans that fit perfectly and look great, I suggest you give the Modern Vintage slim fit cut a try. They’re incredibly flattering, the dark wash and fade looks classy, and never mind what the price tag is because Levi’s jeans last forever. Seriously – I used to wear my mom’s Levi’s in high school, and she owned that pair since her early 20′s. I tried my jeans on again when I got home and realized that I missed the most important detail – they’re incredibly comfortable. I couldn’t feel the fabric at the Levi’s office cos my tights were obstructing the sensation on my legs, but the denim turned out to be softer than I expected. What I love most about these jeans is that there’s no need to break them in and get used to the denim; for a mass-produced pair, this one feels as if it were made just for me. And while I don’t believe that there’s such thing as universally-flattering jeans, I have a feeling that the slim fit will look great on different body types. Liz and Helga ended up choosing the same slim style, and I saw for myself how their jeans fit them perfectly. I’m very happy with my new Modern Vintage jeans and I can’t wait to wear them out!

By the way, my waistline is now 27. New life goal: stay at this size or get skinnier until I’m well into my 30′s.

sweetie, size 27 ain’t bad. :p I’m a 28 on a good day (29-30 some brands). But yeah, do they have anything for girls like me? (Big butt, wide hips–slightly smaller waist) Most skinnies that fit me, tend to be loose on the waist, showing off my “other cleavage” when I sit down. lols

(I kinda realized how gross “other cleavage” sounds. :P )

I think skinny jeans tend to slide down the ass and show off that “other cleavage.” Mine does that a lot and it’s really annoying! I’m not sure what other jeans Levi’s has cos we were only shown the Modern Vintage collection, but I found an article that might be useful to you. It says stretch denim flatters big booties best. Clicky! :D

I can’t believe I missed this. UGH! free jeans. and I missed it. :(

Do they have the classic buttonfly (is that what you call the one that has ten million buttons and no zipper in front?) in semi-flare kaya? I should stop daw wearing skinnies cause I’m “thick”.haha :)

    • Lauren says:

I knoes. :( Hmm, I think it’s only the 501s that have the button fly. But why would you want that? They’re such a hassle to open and close!
