The New Sony Vaio P

Unless your livelihood depends on it, I wouldn’t advise you to spend money on a flashy and expensive laptop. The technology will go obsolete in just a couple of years, plus you might get tired of the design too quickly if you’re a fickle person like myself. But if you insist on only buying pretty gadgets and are comfortable with spending around P59,999 on a notebook, get the new Sony Vaio P. Last year, these ultra-compact notebooks caught the interest of fashionistas around the world because they look and feel as though you’re carrying a stylish clutch purse. I can definitely attest to that, having carried one myself at the launch of the new Sony Vaio laptops last night.

Besides the summer-appropriate fuschia color, what makes the new Sony Vaio P different from the old one is the Mobile Grip Style. The touchpad and mouse buttons are also located to the right and left sides of the screen, respectively (encircled in white), just like the controls of a Nintendo DS. This makes it a lot easier to surf the web or read documents on the go. I found the controls slightly unwieldy, but I eventually got used to it after a while.

Another thing I like about the Sony Vaio P is that it also functions as an eBook reader, thanks to its new built-in accelerometer. This is the technology that detects vibrations and changes the display accordingly. All you need to do is rotate the Sony Vaio P into portrait mode and you can read a document, website, or PDF file as you would a real book. To go to the next page, simply tilt the device to the left or right. I sure could have used something like this when I was in graduate school; I had tons of scanned academic books in PDF format (I still do) but I could never get around to reading them because they didn’t feel like real books.

The Sony Vaio P will be available at the end of the month in two limited edition colors – fuschia pink and orange. And when Sony says “limited edition”, they really do mean it – only be 20 pieces of each color will be shipped to the Philippines. Though it’s something I wouldn’t personally buy for practical reasons, this sleek device is definitely worth its high price tag if you consider its well-made design and useful features.

  1. That’s a very good choice. :) Although I would prefer a laptop over a notebook. I like Vaio in red.
